Being a parent is a lot.
All of us can relate to the everyday heroics we perform while feeding, nurturing and cleaning up after little humans we hope will grow into self-sufficient functioning adults.
But Parenting while Black, is a whole other level of greatness.
Black pregnancy means balancing the joy and anticipation of awaiting new life while knowing the extra obstacles we face in receiving adequate maternal care.
We see the back-to-school excitement in our children’s faces and participate in the ritual of frenzied back to school shopping. All the while bracing ourselves to advocate on a whim should our young son’s antics be labelled “aggressive”.
Black parenting means balancing the gift of watching our young adults find themselves against the nagging fear that the world isn’t ready for them.
We climb laundry mountain and spend Saturday shopping for groceries that have disappeared by Tuesday. Then spend the rest of the week processing the latest antics of the Karen at work, or at the store, or wherever the Karen’s are this week.
Not to go all Beyoncé (not that there is anything wrong with that. Ever.) – but to Parent while Black means remembering we are part of something way Bigger.
Rooted in love of all things us Parenting While Black is here for all of it.
We celebrate Black girl magic, uplift Black boy joy and revel in the simple pleasures of Saturday soup and family BBQs all while making sure our the best of parenting while Black is seen.
We got this, but it takes a village. Parenting While Black is ours.
