Black-owned Watch Brands I’m Adding to My Shopping List

I don’t mind admitting that I had never heard the word horology until I sat down to write this.

Here’s what happened: I was trying to find the 50th birthday gift for Dad and initially considered buying a smartwatch for my tech-geek husband. When I floated this idea by him, to my surprise, he had a near-visceral response against the idea. It seems that as ubiquitous as smartwatches have become, many people still prefer classic and collectible timepieces. His response led me to do a little research and I discovered a secret society of die-hard watch fans I had not fully appreciated before.

Ok, I hadn’t known existed before.

The charm of a traditional watch goes beyond mere functionality. For many people, a “real watch” as they call it, embodies elegance, craftsmanship, and a sense of timelessness that digital devices often lack.

And it turns out that some folks have created a community that embraces time.

The art and science of horology

Horology is the study and measurement of time, as well as the art and science of designing and making clocks and watches. The word comes from the Greek words “hora,” meaning hour or time, and “logos,” meaning study or science. People who specialize in horology, called horologists, create, repair, and maintain timekeeping instruments. They focus on the mechanical, artistic, and historical aspects of these devices.

In short, horologists spend a lot of time thinking about time.

Perhaps this scientific and precise focus is what makes collecting watches more than just a hobby. It’s a passion for many enthusiasts who revel in finding unique and exquisite pieces. For these folks, watches are not just tools for telling time. Watches are works of art that reflect personal style. Several well-known celebrities boast extensive – and expensive – watch collections with pride.

Even as I researched the watches and read the stories behind some of these watch brands, my views of time and watches evolved. I gained an appreciation for this obsession for precision. There is a lot that drives the dedication to the art and the science of time.

And, of course, unless you are new here, you know I had to find out where our story fit into this.
