I don’t mind admitting that I had never heard the word horology until I sat down to write this.
Here’s what happened: I was trying to find the 50th birthday gift for Dad and initially considered buying a smartwatch for my tech-geek husband. When I floated this idea by him, to my surprise, he had a near-visceral response against the idea. It seems that as ubiquitous as smartwatches have become, many people still prefer classic and collectible timepieces. His response led me to do a little research and I discovered a secret society of die-hard watch fans I had not fully appreciated before.
Ok, I hadn’t known existed before.

The word comes from the Greek words “hora,” meaning hour or time, and “logos,” meaning study or science. In short, horologists spend a lot of time thinking about time.

Leaders in this space often start as a small business but create high-quality timepieces and innovate the luxury watch market. They are also challenging the model that excludes many folks from owning nice watches. Many Black-owned watch companies focus not just on style and quality but on offering timeless pieces at affordable prices.
So let’s explore some of the best Black-owned watchmaking companies and the luxury watches they offer. These brands are redefining elegance and craftsmanship in the world of horology.

SPGBK invests in key areas like education and teachers, historically Black colleges and universities, authenticity, and supporting North Carolina and Black-owned businesses. They believe that when you choose SPGBK, you’re not just buying a watch; you’re joining a movement that celebrates community, culture, and creativity.
Talley & Twine Watch Company
Talley & Twine founder on two principles: legacy and lifestyle. Randy Williams started the company, hoping to make high-quality and affordable watches after seeing a market that typically catered to the super-rich. The brand name Talley & Twine derives from an intersection in Virginia, which, since revitalization, symbolizes a promising future.
Known for their bold, stylish designs, Talley & Twine focuses on creating high-quality timepieces with a unique aesthetic. Their watches often feature large faces and minimalist details, enhancing just about any look.
